Description

Persona 3 Portable (P3P) is a 2009 (Japan) / 2010 (North America) / 2011 (Europe) port of the PlayStation 2 JRPG Persona 3 to the PlayStation Portable (PSP). It retains the core story and gameplay of the original while making significant changes and additions to suit the handheld format. Players take on the role of a high school student who, upon transferring to Gekkoukan High School, discovers the “Dark Hour,” a hidden hour between one day and the next where monstrous Shadows roam. The protagonist joins SEES (Specialized Extracurricular Execution Squad), a group of students with the ability to summon Personas, powerful manifestations of their inner selves, to fight the Shadows.

The core gameplay loop revolves around balancing school life and dungeon crawling. During the day, the protagonist attends classes, interacts with classmates, builds relationships (Social Links), and participates in various activities. These Social Links are crucial, as strengthening them empowers the protagonist’s Personas in battle. At night, the player explores Tartarus, a massive, ever-changing tower that appears during the Dark Hour. The combat is turn-based, with players exploiting enemy weaknesses using different elemental attacks and Persona abilities. The “One More” system rewards hitting weaknesses with extra turns, adding a strategic layer to battles.

Persona 3 Portable makes several notable changes from the original Persona 3. The most significant is the addition of a playable female protagonist, offering a new perspective on the story, altered Social Links, and different character interactions. Exploration outside of Tartarus is streamlined, using a point-and-click interface instead of directly controlling the character. While this change was made to accommodate the PSP’s hardware limitations, it’s a point of contention among some fans. However, the combat system is improved, allowing direct control over all party members (a feature introduced in Persona 4), making battles more strategic.

Despite the visual compromises made for the PSP, Persona 3 Portable remains a compelling and engaging JRPG. The core story, dealing with themes of mortality, loss, and the importance of human connection, remains powerful. The addition of the female protagonist adds replay value and offers a fresh experience even for those who played the original. The blend of social simulation and dungeon crawling, combined with the addictive Persona fusion system, creates a unique and memorable gameplay experience that makes P3P a standout title on the PSP. It is a great entry point to the Persona Series.
